Stop using AGE as an excuse… here’s why

I came across a comment on a Facebook post from one of our members where a friend of hers had said she was ‘too old to do that’. Meaning, she was too old to exercise at Nerdy Girl Fitness.

Crystine, a woman in her 70’s, doing a deadlift.

Age is a number you can’t control. But many people use their age as an excuse to not start a fitness routine, regardless of what it is. While we can’t control our age, we can control our actions.

There was a study done in 2014 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that states that 1 in 4 adults around the age of 50 are inactive outside of their regular job.

Not under active.

Inactive. As in, no activity at all.

So, 1 in 4 adults around the age of 50 go to work, sit all day, come home and sit and watch TV. That’s a reality.

In less than a month, I will be 49…. 1 year short of 50. I refuse to let my age stop me from being physically active.

Here’s why….

In 2014 I tore 3 disks in my back in a random gardening incident (that’s a story for another time). This injury caused tremendous pain, muscle spasms, sciatica and more.I couldn’t even put pressure on my left leg to walk, nevermind workout!

There was never a time that I thought “Eh! It is what it is! I’ll just stop exercising.”

I think there is ALWAYS something we can do to move forward regardless of the issue.

For example, during this time I couldn’t lift any weight without going into spasm (even a coffee cup….), so I focused on doing the exercises prescribed by my physical therapist.

As I got stronger, I added in upper body exercises using light resistance bands.

It took a year… but eventually I healed and got back to my regular routine.

If I had given up… guess what? I would NOT be able to put pressure on my left leg today, almost 4 years later.

Ladies… if you don’t use it, you lose it! This is true and scientifically proven.

In that same 2014 study done by the CDC, inactivity leads to a whole host of diseases including obesity, cancer, hypertension, and more.

When we shrug at a situation, and accept that it’s just the way it is, it ACTUALLY makes it that way.

Do our bodies go through metabolic changes as we age?

YES!

But are they made far worse by the fact that most people just say “Well it’s because I’m getting old?”

YES!

We have far more control over so many situations than we give ourselves credit for.

I’m sorry but STOP using your age, or anything else, as your excuse!

Yes. Our bodies change. They change every single day.

But so much CAN be managed and controlled.

Age is a number you can’t control.

But you can control what you do every single day at every single age 😉 And there’s no better time to start than TODAY!

Committed to your success,

Patti
